Camp Magis

at Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center, Huttonsville

“Go, do not be afraid, and serve.”

Pope Francis at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro

The new Camp Magis experience for Catholic School students in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston seeks to provide an environment in which our seventh grade students can grow in their faith and in the call to Christian service, especially in relationship

† to one another,
† to their school and parish communities,
† to the larger communities in which they live,
† to society as a whole.

Activities at the camp, as well as classroom lessons and service projects during the year at our Catholic schools, will help students to make connections with their profession of faith and the call by Pope Francis to “Go, do not be afraid, and serve.”

Students will come to understand that the Gospel mandate to serve others

† Brings the joy of the Gospel to both those who serve and those who are served
† Takes energy and commitment
† Often requires sacrifice and hard work, but is transformational and life giving
† Reminds us that the Gospel is for everyone
† Means bearing personal witness to the love of God
† Helps us to grow in the ability to love one another, to learn to listen, to be accepting of others with no one excluded
† Is accompanied by the constant presence of Christ, who goes before us and guides us in the effort to authentically live as people of the Gospel

Pope Francis told the youth gathered in Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day in 2013, “Go, do not be afraid, and serve.” He added, “If you follow these three ideas, you will experience that the one who evangelizes is evangelized; the one who transmits the joy of faith receives joy.” We hope that the experience of Camp Magis will lead our students to that joy.
